Mary Frances Stevens, 69, most recently of Stafford County lost her battle with Multiple Sclerosis and Cancer on Friday, April 26, 2013 at her eldest granddaughter’s home in Spotsylvania County.

Mary was born on June 7, 1943 in Washington, D.C. She was raised in Manassas where she also started her family. In 1974, the family moved to the mountains of Nelson County where Mary indulged her passion and love for animals by rescuing and raising a variety of pets on her own mini-farm and devoting over 30 years of service working at a local animal hospital until her retirement in 2010.

Due to her progressive struggle with MS, Mary moved to Stafford in 2011 where she lived with her eldest daughter until her cancer diagnosis and hospital confinement in early April.

Mary is survived by her mother, Isabelle H. Stevens of Shipman; her brother, Roger H. Stevens of Manassas; her daughters, Melissa L. Simpson (John Conley) of Hartwood, Carin D. (Eddie)  Fox of Spotsylvania County and Ellen Dietrich (Aaron) Ghent of Caroline County; her grandchildren, Mary Anne Simpson (Brad Coles) and Heather Simpson (Drew) Frye both of Spotsylvania, Caitlyn M. Simpson (Ryan Wallis) and J. Cody Simpson (Amber Grant) of Hartwood, Norman R. Hurst of Richmond, Michaela E. Fox of Spotsylvania County, Jamee L. (Quincy) Robinson of Roseland, Ryan A. Morris, Alister L. Pollard and Isabelle G. Pollard all of Caroline County; her great grandchildren, Alyssa, Joshua, Chloe, Kayleigh, Andrew, Jalen, Gabriel, Tyler and Jaxxon; her nieces, Amanda Stevens Allen of Kill Devil Hills, N.C. and Emily Stevens of Bristow; her great nieces, Samantha, Kylie and Gracie Allen. Mary was expecting her 10th great grandchild in December.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the SPCA, 10819 Courthouse Rd. Fredericksburg, Va. 22408.
