Yvonne Sharlene Velez, 56 of Fredericksburg passed through the pearly gates on July 31, 2017 surrounded by family. She fought a hard battle with breast cancer.
Survivors include her husband, Hector Velez; her children, Brandon Velez (Corinne), Brittany Velez (Corey Burrows); one grandchild Chloe; parents Charlie and Marie Mitchell; two sisters Peggy Heflin and Cindy McGann (John); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Sharlene enjoyed life to the fullest. She always brightened up a room with her presence. She loved being a nurse at Rappahannock Foot and Ankle Specialists (RFAS) and deeply cared for her patients. Prior to working at RFAS she was a certified mastectomy fitter in the surrounding Fredericksburg area. This was her true passion. Her dedication to the women affected by breast cancer was proven with annual fund drives which she organized and 100% of all donations went to breast cancer programs in the local Fredericksburg area.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mary Washington Hospital Foundation, Breast Cancer Fund in memory of Y. Sharlene Velez. Please contact Tracy of MWH at (540) 741-1512 for details.
The family will have a celebration of life to honor Sharlene at a later date.

My beautiful sister-in-law, my comadre, my hero, my friend. Thank you for our late night chats. Your love and devotion to my brother and godchildren had no bounds. Thank you for allowing me the privilege to be there with you. Your sense of humor, love and strength kept us going until the very end. You will forever be in my heart. I will never forget you.
P.S. You are still the strongest woman in my life.

We miss Shar terribly and will always cherish the memory of her smile and the laughs we were blessed to share with her. I will always cherish the memory of Nags Head and how Shar removed that hideous sand bur from the bottom of my foot with tweezers and a steak knife. I will also cherish the memory of us all dancing under the stars at the Starry Nights event and how she got me line-dancing, like no one was watching. Hector, Brandon, Brittany and family, we are so sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry for your loss of Sharlene. It's always difficult to lose a loved one but it's especially tragic to lose them to death while still young. My family and I were devastated when we lost my grandma and there are days when it's harder to cope with our loss. However, I've found comfort from the promises in the Bible. Two of my favorites are John 5:28,29 where it says there will be a resurrection and Revelation 21:3-5 which speaks of Jehovah through His son Christ Jesus eliminating ALL suffering from the Earth. It's my hope that you read these scriptures and it brings you the same comfort they have brought me. Please accept my sincerest sympathies.

Shar will always have a special place in my heart. As a patient at RFAS I was a frequent visitor with my foot issue, she was always so encouraging and funny. She always took such good care of those around her. When she spoke of her cancer returning she said she wasn't giving into it and she was determined to fight. I will miss her and I thank God that we all were so blessed to of had her touch our lives in one way or another. You are missed and loved always.
