Virginia C. Rainey, 94, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Binghamton NY, she and Tom raised their seven children in Bren Mar Park in Fairfax. Virginia was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church for more than 60 years where her children attended school and she was an active member of the Alter Guild and Arts and Crafts groups. She was also a founding member of the Bren Mar Park pool where the family spent most of their summer days.
Virginia retired from the federal government in 1983 where she worked as a computer programmer. She was well known for her cooking and baking, especially the large variety of delicious Christmas cookies she made for family and friends. Virginia was also an avid reader and quilter. She read several books a week and made hand-sewn quilts for each of her 16 grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Thomas J Rainey; her children, Tom (Wendy), Sandy (Joe), Catherine, Mary Beth (Jeff), Joe (Mary Helen) and Walter (Traci); 16 grandchildren Lindsey, Amanda, Shannon, Matthew, Crystal, Claire, Trip, Brittany, Nicole, Abby, Waverli, Robin, Joey, Tommy, Maryann and Rebecca; and seven great-grandchildren Alahna, Harper, Caleb, Nora, Jordan, Rivi and Camden. She was preceded in death by her son, Gilbert Lee Rainey.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, November 30 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg, VA.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 1 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Fredericksburg, VA. Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 2 at Fairfax Memorial Park, Fairfax, VA.
Memorials may be made to Capital Caring Hospice 111 Olde Greenwich Dr., Fredericksburg, Va. 22408.

I treasure the warm and wonderful memories i have of hanging out at the Rainey house all through High School~! There was always room for one more!! :) My thoughts and prayers are with you all as you celebrate Virginia's long and beautiful life! She was a special woman!! ~Sally (White) Ogden
